IMAGE PICKUP DEVICE AND METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of properly photographing an object having various luminance distributions.

SOLUTION: A digital camera 10a has three photographing modes respectively named a narrow mode, a normal mode, and a wide mode. An operating point setting part 903 variably sets an operating point of a CCD 26 for specifying a luminance range of the object fit within the dynamic range of an image pickup element on the basis of the set photographing mode. An LUT setting part 902 variably sets a gradation conversion LUT as the embodiment of gradation conversion characteristics (γ correction characteristics) of the gradation conversion in a γ correction circuit 55 on the basis of the set photographing mode. The operating point set with the operating point setting part 903 and the gradation conversion LUT set with the LUT setting part 902 are synchronously changed corresponding to the change of the photographing mode.
