<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an assistant which improves performance of a phenolic developer useful as a developer for a thermal recording material, and a phenolic developer composition which fulfills various required performances such as excellent color developability for a composition. <P>SOLUTION: The assistant for the phenolic developer for the thermal recording material is composed of a compound wherein N-methylolacrylamide is added to phenols. The phenolic developer composition is composed of the phenolic developer and the assistant for the phenolic developer. In the recording material, a color-developable compound, a sensitizer and an additive are blended into the phenolic developer composition.
