PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To grasp a combustion state by accurately detecting an infinitesimal ion current generated in a combustion chamber, in an ion current detecting device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This ion current detecting device for the internal combustion engine includes an ion current detecting part 4 for generating an ion current in response to amplification gain by detecting the ion current generated between a central electrode of a spark plug 3 and the combustion chamber in a combustion stroke of the internal combustion engine, and a comparator 5 for generating a signal provided from the ion current detecting part 4 and displaying combustion by comparing a signal with a combustion determining reference level being a combustion determining reference. In this case, discharge time of the spark coil set to a request time or more from an engine, is set to 0.5 to 1.5 ms to minimum time Tcmb_1 of the smallest output in generation of the ion current provided by the combustion under an operation condition.
