An oil-soluble molybdenum complex of an ashless oxazoline dispersant. preferably an oil-soluble reaction product of a molybdenum compound, such as molybdic oxide with 0.5 to 1 molar equivalent of a hydrocarbon-substituted monoxazoline and bisoxazolines obtained as a reaction product of hydrocarbyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid or ester or anhydride, for example, polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride with from 1 to 2 molar equivalents of a 2,2-disubstituted 1-amino-1-alkanols, such as tris- (hydroxymethylamino)methane (THAM), is a useful additive to a lubricating oil and to gasolines since both the sludge dispersant and antifriction properties of said oil are enhanced. The oxazolines include lactone oxazolines.
