The mantle is supported in between its top and bottom ends so that these ends can expand in the upwards and downwards directions respectively. The support device is positioned above the centre of gravity for the pre-heater. A pre-heater for a carbon black production apparatus is used to increase air temperature by heat exchange with the combustion gases and comprises a substantially vertical elongated mantle with an air inlet and outlet, a number of tubes located inside the mantle and a smoke inlet chamber and smoke outlet chamber for smoke to enter and exit the tubes. The mantle is supported in between its top and bottom ends so that it can expand upwards above and downwards below the support device, which is positioned above the centre of gravity for the pre-heater.
