PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for a vehicle which can prevent a delay in response by alleviating variations in a cycle balance at the time of switching of an operating mode. SOLUTION: The air conditioner for the vehicle, which is provided with switching valves 11, 12 and expansion valves 5, 8, performs a plurality of operating modes of air conditioning by the opening and closing of the switching valves 11, 12 and expansion valves 5, 8. The switching valves switch a passage of a refrigerant, and the expansion valves 5, 8 reduce the pressure of the refrigerant. A control part 14 controls a compressor 1 so that its number of revolutions is brought in agreement with a predetermined value by detecting the number of revolutions of the compressor 1 in a request for the switching of the operating mode. Then, when the number of revolutions is brought in agreement with the predetermined value, the control part 14 opens and closes the expansion valves 5, 8 by detecting the degree of opening of the expansion valves 5, 8 so that the degree of opening of the expansion valves 5, 8 is brought in agreement with a predetermined value. When the degree of opening of the expansion valves 5, 8 is brought in agreement with the predetermined value, the control part 14 opens and closes the switching valves 11, 12, and performs control of the normal operation after the opening and closing of all the valves have been completed.
