PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping water composition for lithographic printing which does not require any specialized skill in a printing operation and can perfectly substitute isopropyl alcohol in all printers of a differing mechanism, does not impair an image without dissolving an image portion, even when the remnant damping water on the plate surface becomes water droplets and the moisture vaporizes during the stoppage of the printer, and besides, inhibits the printing problems such as smudging, blinding and emulsification of a printing plate, does not involve safety, hygiene and fire defense problems, and ensures the availability of high-quality printed matter. SOLUTION: The damping water composition for lithographic printing contains at least one kind of chemical compound selected from the group consisting of a chemical compound composed of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide added to diethylenetriamine, a chemical compound of bromonitro alcohol, a 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one compound, a p-hydroxy benzoic acid derivative, a chemical compound of azole and a heterocyclic alkyl ammonium salt.
