The method involves recording a surrounding area of a tow coupling (3) and a coupling lug (4) by using an electronic camera for gaining graphic data. The data is processed by an image processor (12) and compared with allowed samples and threshold values for producing assistance signals. Images gained from the data and the assistance signals are displayed on a displace device for monitoring a coupling process of the coupling. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method of monitoring a tow coupling of a towing vehicle.
