PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To modulate a drop diameter at an optimal drop speed by using a rectangular driving waveform and permit recording without deterioration in quality. SOLUTION: The liquid drop discharge head discharges small drops by using a driving waveform whose voltage level is ternary and time constant is fixed as a driving signal applied to a piezoelectric element, with a first potential difference of the ternary voltage levels, and large drops with a second potential difference. At this time, a pulse width at the time of discharge of the small drops is set at a value approximate to 1/2 of the natural period Tc of the head, a pulse width at the time of discharge of the large drops is set at a value deviating from 1/2 of the natural period Tc of the head to make equal to the drop speed of the small drops. For example, a pulse width at the time of discharge of the large drops is set at a value 0.63 to 0.72 times the natural period Tc of the head or 0.88 to 1.05 times, preferably 0.66 to 0.69 times the natural period Tc of the head or 0.93 to 0.98 times.
