PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further shorten the storage length of a lens barrel of the type in which when the optical element of a part of a photographic optical system is stored, it is retracted from the common optical axis of the other optical elements and also moved further backward than a photographing position, thereby shortening a storage length. SOLUTION: The exposure control unit 41 has a recess formed so as to face the retractable optical element 42 in a retracted position. When a linearly movable ring 36 retracts from the photographing position to a storage position, the retractable optical element moved to the retracted position and an exposure control unit are moved close to each other in the direction of an optical axis such that part of the retractable optical element enters the recess.
