To finish-machine a workpiece in which teeth have been rough-cut, the flanks of a globoidal, gear-shaped or worm-shaped tool are brought into working contact with the one and then the other workpiece flank under a certain applied pressure. The magnitude of the applied pressure is varied here as a function of the relative angular position between the tool and the workpiece, which angular position changes with the removal of stock. Owing to the fact that the rotary angle of the tool relative to the workpiece is limited and the machining operation is only ended when the limit of the relative rotary angle is reached, the preset tooth distance tolerance can be adhered to irrespective of the machining duration. <IMAGE>
