An adaptor for operating on square ended tap spindles, e.g. for underground gas and liquid pipelines, has a shaped fit (1) onto a tool handle and with a socket profile (2) into which is fitted one of a range of sleeve. The inner profile of the sleeves is selected to fit onto set spindles while a single outer profile of the adaptor fits onto the tool handle. The operator only requires a set of sleeves to cover a range of spindle sizes.
