The method and prognostic system is for operating a vehicle 10 such as a hybrid, fuel cell and electric vehicle. Test signals are applied to electric components 28, 44, 54, 70, 62, 158, 162, 176 and 178 such as dc/dc converters or invertors for powering an electric device. The response from the test signals are used to determine a state of the component such as the level of degradation of the component. The operation of the vehicle is controlled based partly on the determined state of the tested components. Consequently the vehicle may be operated in a limp-home mode. |
