The method involves determining a level of occupancy of a buffer, and comparing the level of occupancy with a preset threshold. An encoding mode from amongst multiple encoding modes is determined when the level of occupancy is above the preset threshold, and a sample is encoded based on the determined encoding mode. The sample is encoded based on a default encoding mode when the level is below the preset threshold.
