PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing adjuster having a simple constitution in which a locking pin is restrained from accidentally disengaged from an engagement recess, and a knock is surely prevented from occurring. SOLUTION: The valve timing adjuster comprises a 1st rotary body rotating in combination with a crankshaft, a 2nd rotary body fixed integrally with an intake or exhaust camshaft, and the engagement recess provided in either one of the 1st and the 2nd rotary bodies. A locking pin is held in a holding hole provided in the other part of the 1st rotary body or the 2nd rotary body. At a time when the oil pressure is dropped, the locking pin is pushed up by the urging force of a urging means, and brought into slant contact with the wall face of the locking recess so as to impart relative torque to the 1st and the 2nd rotary bodies.
