<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate, by using a method for generating an index key for an image, a matching key capable of solving a problem where images different from one another can not be discriminated from one another so well in a high spatial frequency structure, substantially invariable with respect to rotation, expansion/reduction, and parallel movement, and improved in discrimination power as compared with a conventional type. <P>SOLUTION: This generation method of a matching key is started by forming an expression value of a space region of an image 501 substantially invariable with respect to parallel movement of the image 501. Then, at least any of rotation, expansion and reduction in the expression value of the space region is converted to parallel movement in order to form a converted image (580). Then, an expression value of the converted image substantially invariable with respect to the parallel movement of the converted image is formed.
