In a method for non-contact measuring of a distance between an optical sensor and an object, an electromagnetic wave being used to focus on the surface of the object, the distance from the focusing point to a point on the surface of the object is varied in accordance with a prescribed pattern, while focusing on the surface of the object at a number of successive instances. The foreknown pattern and the time elapsed between the respective instances provide the data for calculating the distance in question. The options include those of altering the position of the object in accordance with the pattern or altering the position of the sensor or alternatively altering the focal length, which is done, for example, by altering the frequency of the wave or, for example, by altering the position of the wave source or of a focusing lens in the sensor.
