The invention teaches a method for battery capacity detection as well as an apparatus provided to perform that method where the battery (10) is discharged for a predetermined amount of time under the control of a battery monitoring controller (20) and where the discharged energy and an open circuit voltage upon starting and ending the discharge is determined and the capacity is calculated according to the determined values.
