The storage and retrieval machine (6) for the putting into stock and retrieval of paper rolls (4) comprises a chassis (18) and a holding device to hold a horizontally lying paper roll which can be lifted and lowered by two spaced apart support feet (23a,23b) on the holding device. The holding device is installed on a bogie (19) which is mounted on the chassis to rotate around a vertical axis by at least 180 degrees. The holding device includes a continuous track section (22) installed between the support feed to accommodate a trolley. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a system for the preparation and intermediate storage of paper rolls and for the feed of these to at least one roll stand by the aforesaid storage and retrieval machine; and (B) a method for the operation of a system for the preparation and intermediate storage of paper rolls.
