The invention relates to a safety device for a motor vehicle, comprising: a plurality of passenger protecting means and sensors allocated thereto; a processing unit (10; 16, 22, 23, 24) that verifies whether the passenger protecting means and/or allocated sensors are in operation and/or operate properly and determines status- related data (21) therefrom; and an output unit (26, 27, 28, 20) which communicates in which operating state each individual passenger protecting means and/or sensor is by taking into account all status- related data (21). The invention also relates to a method for communicating the status of a safety device of a motor vehicle.
