摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon fouling determining method of an internal combustion engine for improving carbon fouling determining accuracy, by easily discriminating between a leak current and an ion current in normal combustion. SOLUTION: This spark ignition type internal combustion engine has a spark plug; and is mounted on a vehicle; and determines carbon fouling of the spark plug on the basis of the detected ion current by detecting the ion current generated in a combustion chamber after ignition via the spark plug; and determines the carbon fouling of the spark plug, when the detected ion current satisfies a predetermined condition, when a detected operation state falls within an operation determining area set in response to an operation area becoming intake pipe pressure near atmospheric pressure, with a predetermined engine speed as the upper limit and with predetermined intake pipe pressure as the lower limit, by detecting the operation state of the internal combustion engine.
