SCHEDULING MODE SWITCHING FOR UPLINK TRANSMISSION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for a base station to control the scheduling mode used in a mobile terminal for carrying out uplink data transmissions in a mobile network and a mechanism for scheduling mode switching on the network side.

SOLUTION: The base station can receive feedback for controlling scheduling of uplink data transmission between the mobile terminal and the base station, can estimate the buffer occupancy at the mobile terminal based on the feedback received, and can switch the mobile terminal from a scheduling mode presently used for uplink transmission to another scheduling mode based on the estimated buffer occupancy. In particular, "rate up" requests in a rate controlled scheduling mode and buffer occupancy reports or traffic volume measurements may be used to estimate the buffer occupancy at the mobile terminal.
