<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device which uses a light emission element as a light source and is capable of outputting the light having a uniform brightness distribution and aligned polarization. <P>SOLUTION: The illumination device comprises a first light guide member 20 provided with an edge surface 21 to which the light emitted from a light emission diode 10 is made incident, an edge surface 22 from which the light made incident from the edge surface 21 is emitted and a light extraction surface 23 through which the light proceeding toward the edge surface 21 from the edge surface 22 while repeating inside reflections is emitted in the course of the proceeding, a reflection type polarizing plate 40 which reflects one side of s-polarized light or p-polarized light, returns the same from the edge surface 22 into the first light guide member 20 and transmits other light in the light emitted from the edge surface 22, a retardation plate 50 which converts the light transmitted by the polarizing plate 40 to the same polarized light with the polarized light reflected by the polarizing plate 40 and a second light guide member 30 provided with an edge surface 31 to which the polarized light is made incident, an edge surface 32 located on the opposite side to the edge surface 31 and a light extraction surface 33 through which the light proceeding toward the edge surface 32 from the edge surface 31 while repeating inside reflections is emitted in the course of the proceeding. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
