A system for providing a user with an indication of an event by transmitting a predetermined signal and receiving acknowledgement of the reception of the indication from the user has been disclosed. The indication of an event to the user occurs without the transmission of the predetermined signal incurring communication charges by avoiding transition of the user device to an off hook condition. An acknowledgement signal receiving means receive an acknowledgement signal without the transmission of the acknowledgement signal incurring communication charges by avoiding transition of the acknowledgement signal receiving means to an off-hook condition.
