PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data communications apparatus, its control method, and a program capable of simply selecting a desired enciphering system in matching with the size of data to be transmitted. SOLUTION: A key for enciphering is obtained from an IC card and an enciphering system is retrieved, corresponding to the key on an enciphering selection table; an ID of the enciphering system is registered with a preferred enciphering means table, in the descending order of enciphering speed; a time for enciphering when the data to be transmitted are enciphered, according to the enciphering system related to the registered ID is calculated, in the order of registration with the preferred enciphering table; only an enciphering system whose calculated time for enciphering is shorter than a prescribed time are decided as a candidate for an enciphering system for enciphering the data to be transmitted; and the decided enciphering system is displayed, together with the time for enciphering and cipher intensity so that the system can be selected by an OK button and a reselection button.
