PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a probe position error detecting method of a data storage system utilizing a probe, and a probe position error detecting apparatus. SOLUTION: Probe position error detection, in a data storage system provided with a data recording medium and a probe detecting data by scanning the data recording medium, includes a step in which servo codes satisfying such condition that a number Q in which a numerical value of a bit constituting a code word of a gray code of which the hamming distance is 1 and Q+1 (Q:natural number) exist alternately are prepared, and a step in which when a servo probe scans continuously a bit in which a numerical value of a bit constituting the code word of the servo code is 1, the position error of the probe is detected from a signal read out by the servo probe at the time of tracking.
