PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder realizing the improvement of operability while performing automatic focusing in accordance with a recording mode, and an image recording method. SOLUTION: The image recorder having a moving picture recording function or a still picture recording function is equipped with a focusing means to perform automatic focusing control on a subject, and an operation means to instruct the focusing means to perform or inhibit AF and concurrently instruct the time when a moving picture is recorded or a still picture is recorded. Since "performing/inhibiting AF" and "recording" are instructed by one operation means, the operability in carrying out performing/inhibiting AF and recording is remarkably improved, the width of a photographing condition is widened, and photographer's intention is easily reflected in recording.
