PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a liquid crystal display device in which resolution of an image is improved and of which the power consumption is reduced. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device 100, the maximum value of a gray scale level is detected with a gray scale level maximum value detection part 4 from the gray scale level obtained by decomposing a picture signal into color data of respective R, G, B colors for each pixel region of an LED panel 2 with an RGB digital conversion circuit 1. Then, an image based on the image signal is displayed based on light transmitted by the pixel region of the LED panel 2 by making a backlight light source 3 periodically output light rays of the respective R, G, B colors with a PWM (pulse width modulation) control circuit 5 so as not to make the light rays of the respective colors with intensity values corresponding to the maximum values of the gray scale level overlap with one another, making an LED control circuit 6 maximize transmittance values of pixel regions corresponding to the color data of the respective R, G, B colors with the maximum values of the gray scale level, and setting and adjusting transmittance values of other pixel regions corresponding to the gray scale levels of the obtained respective R, G, B colors.
