A fuel system used to supply an internal combustion engine, i.e. a diesel engine (2) has a fuel line (11) coupled to a fuel and water separator (10). The water outlet connects with an adsorption filter (4) having an exchangeable filter element (5). The adsorption material is in the form of a granular material, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinylchloride. Alternatively, a sintered material is used. The limited amount of fuel separated is burned in the catalyzer while the purified water is discharged.
