PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial method for producing 5-methylisoxazole from 4,4-dialkoxy-2-butanone in high yield and low isomer content by a simple method. SOLUTION: The method for producing 5-methylisoxazole contains (A) a first step to react 4,4-dialkoxy-2-butanone with a secondary amine in an alcohol solvent to obtain a reaction mixture containing 4-dialkylamino-3-buten-2-one as a main component and (B) a second step to react the reaction mixture with an acid salt of hydroxylamine in an aqueous solvent without separating/purifying the 4-dialkylamino-3-buten-2-one from the reaction mixture.
