There are provided a drive assisting device and a drive assisting method capable of sufficiently assisting visual confirmation of a driver by easily judging positional relation with other vehicle at the time of turning to right or left or altering the lane. A camera (10) picks up the side rear view of the vehicle on which the camera (10) is set. An image processing section (11) detects the rearward distance from its own vehicle according to the image picked up by the camera (10) and creates a guide line for assisting operation of the vehicle at the time of turning to right or left or altering the lane according to the detected distance. A display control section (12) displays the guide line thus created on a monitor (13) while superposing it on the image picked up by the camera (10). Consequently, the driver can easily judge positional relation with other vehicle at the time of turning to right or left or altering the lane.
