The internal combustion engine has four cylinders, two of which run mechanically parallel as cylinder-pair. The engine is equipped with a camshaft (15), which has an intake cam (16,17,18,19) and an exhaust cam for each cylinder. The engine has a firing order with the cylinder-pair running mechanically and thermodynamically parallel and cylinders arranged on camshaft so that they run mechanically parallel. An independent claim is also included for the procedure.
