PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device wherein a functional layer is protected when forming its cathode by film deposition and the functional layer is prevented from being deteriorated. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent device to emit luminescent light toward the opposite side with respect to a substrate includes the substrate, an anode provided on the substrate, an functional layer containing a luminescent layer provided on the anode, and a cathode provided on the functional layer, and a protective layer having band gap energy smaller than that of a material composing the cathode and light transmissibility is provided between the functional layer and the cathode.
