PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new base for a hair cosmetic, having superior moisture resistance, retentivity of set and elasticity compared to those of a conventional base for the hair cosmetic, hardly causing flaking, and providing excellent finished appearance when coated on the hair; and to provide a copolymer used for the base. SOLUTION: The block copolymer for the base for the hair cosmetic is obtained by (co)polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and optionally an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic ester in the presence of an azo group-containing polysiloxane, and contains a siloxane segment, an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid unit, and optionally an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic ester unit as constituent components.
