PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of processing an optical fiber with which an NBOHC (Non-Bridging Oxygen Hole Center) over the all parts of the optical fiber wound around a bobbin can be extinguished. SOLUTION: The method of processing the optical fiber includes a step A for winding the optical fiver around the bobbin and a step B for exposing the optical fiber wound around the bobbin to a gaseous atmosphere including heavy hydrogen gas. In the step A, when the outer diameter of the optical fiber and the spacing with which the optical fiber is wound around the bobbin are defined respectively as (d) and S, the optical fiber is wound around the bobbin so as to satisfy the relational expression of S≥2d. In the the step B, after depressurizing the inside of space where the optical fiber wound around the bobbin is contained and after the inside of the space is replaced by gas including the heavy hydrogen gas, the optical fiber is exposed to the atmosphere including the heavy hydrogen gas in the inside of the space.
