PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surge absorber having a long service life which is superior in chemical stability at high temperature region, and which is covered with an oxide layer superior in adhesive force, with respect to the main discharge surface. SOLUTION: The surge absorber comprises a columnar ceramics 4, in which a conductive coating film 3 is divided and formed via a discharge gap 2, a pair of main discharge electrode members 5 which are opposed and contacted with the conductive coating film 3, and a cylindrical ceramics 8 in which the columnar ceramics 4 is sealed in the interior together with a sealing gas 7.
