PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compression ignition engine materializing premixed compression ignition without causing big deterioration of fuel economy even under heavy load operation condition as compared with conventional one. SOLUTION: The compression ignition engine (diesel engine 1) executing fuel injection at a timing earlier than compression top dead center and promoting premixing of fuel and igniting and burning fuel in a combustion chamber 3 is provided with heat accumulation material 10 installed at a suitable position where heat at a time of compression and combustion is easily absorbed in a cylinder, a variable valve timing mechanism (actuators 11, 12) changing open close timing of an exhaust valve 5 and an intake valve 7, and a control device 9 controlling the variable valve timing mechanism to delay open timing of the exhaust valve 5 than open timing of a regular engine.
