PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a support for an image recording material compatibilizing high flatness with excellent gloss in a higher order, enabling the recording of a high-quality image free from unevenness and suitable for various image recording materials and provide a method for efficiently producing the support. SOLUTION: The support for an image recording material is composed of a base paper and at least two coating layers formed on at least one surface of the paper. The thickness variation A of the coating layer farthest from the base paper surface and the thickness variation B of the coating layer contacting with the base paper surface satisfy the formula A≤(1/3)×B. The coating layer being in contact with the base paper surface is preferably applied by a blade coater and the coating layer farthest from the base paper surface is preferably applied by a curtain coater or a spray coater.
