Halogenated aromatic carboxylic acids and anhydrides are prepared by reacting o-halogenoaryldichloromethane with Cl2 + H2O in presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. Examples describe the preparation of 2,6-dichlorobenzoic acid and its anhydride from 2,6-dichlorobenzol chloride (I). Other specified starting materials are 2-chloro-, 2,3,6-trichloro-, 6-chloro-2-nitro- and 6-chloro-2-methoxy-benzol chlorides. (I) is made by reacting with Cl2 at 180-185 DEG C., 6-chloro-2-nitrotoluene containing 0.5 wt. per cent pyridine. |
