A developing apparatus having a developer carrying member for carrying a developer including toner and carrier to a portion opposed to an image bearing member, a first chamber having the developer carrying member disposed in its opening, a conveying member disposed in the first chamber for conveying the developer in the longitudinal direction of the developer carrying member, a second chamber to which the developer is supplied from the first chamber through a first communicating portion leading to the first chamber and which supplies the developer to a developing chamber through a second communicating portion leading to the first chamber, and an agitating and conveying member disposed in the second chamber and rotatable to agitate and convey the developer, the second chamber and the agitating and conveying member being disposed while inclined so that their second communicating portion side is higher than their first communicating portion side, the first communicating portion side of the first chamber being higher than the first communicating portion side of the second chamber, and a developer is supplied from a supply opening provided in the upper portion of an area of the second chamber to which the developer is supplied from the first communicating portion.
