SURFACE-COATED CUTTING TOOL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool combining toughness and wear resistance of the cutting tool in a high degree and suppressing particularly film chipping. SOLUTION: This surface-coated cutting tool is provided with a base material and a coat formed on the base material. The coat is formed as an outermost layer on the base material and has compressive stress changed to have strength distribution in the thickness direction of the coat. In the strength distribution, compressive stress on the surface of the coat continuously increases from the surface of the coat down to an intermediate point positioned between the surface of the coat and the bottom face of the coat, has a maximum point at the intermediate point, and continuously decreases from the intermediate point to the bottom face of the coat.
