摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish a new spacer system which does not require any expensive, custom-designed glass beads in a xenon discharge type planar fluorescent lamp for a liquid crystal backlight to achieve a structure which can withstand an atmospheric pressure even with a large area, and to form a heat insulating layer on a front surface of the lamp so that a liquid crystal display will not be adversely affected by heat generated when the lamp is lighted. SOLUTION: A plurality of rows of V-shaped grooves 11, 21, 22 and 31 in the form of a dotted line that function as a spacer are formed on a front glass substrate 1, an intermediate glass substrate 2 and a back glass substrate 3, respectively. A transparent conductive film 24 and a phosphor coating film 23 are formed on the front surface and the back surface of the intermediate glass substrate 2, respectively. A phosphor coating film 33 and an opaque conductive film 32 are formed on the front surface and the back surface of the back glass substrate 3, respectively. Then, the three glass substrates are stacked one on another and respective peripheral portions are bonded by welding via frit glass 4 to form a two-layer lamp sealing body. A two-layer planer fluorescent lamp is thereby provided with a structure in which the front-side layer functions as a vacuum heat insulating layer 51 while the back-side layer functions as a rare gas layer 61 of xenon gas, for example.
