<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly switch a printing mode in an image forming apparatus which carries out printing by forming a latent image by scanning light beams on a latent image carrier, and then by transferring a toner image formed by developing the latent image to a recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: In high resolving printing, the action of forming the latent image to an effective image region by making a light beam SL1 which scans in a direction (+X) and a first scanning region a light beam for latent image formation, and the action of forming the latent image to the effective image region by making a light beam SL2 which scans in a direction (-X) and the first scanning region the light beam for latent image formation are repeated alternately. The so-called two-way scanning mode is thus carried out, whereby the latent image is formed by a high resolution. On the other hand, in low resolving printing, the latent image is formed by scanning only the light beam SL1 for latent image formation on a photoreceptor.
