PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for diagnosing a failure of an in-tank canister system capable of accurately distinguishing a failure of a fuel tank and a failure of a canister without complicating a structure and increasing manufacturing cost of the in-tank canister system. SOLUTION: Existence of a failure of the fuel tank 3 is diagnosed by detecting pressure drop in the fuel tank 3 with making a change over valve 16 provided in a evaporation piping 12 open to keep communication between an inside of the canister 11 and an inside of the fuel tank 3 and driving a negative pressure pump 17 provided in an atmospheric pressure introduction pipe 13. After that, existence of a failure of the canister 11 is diagnosed with making the change over valve 16 close and driving the negative pressure pump 17. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
