PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can prevent the occurrence of toner scattering and surface staining by controlling toner density according to a change in an amount of electrostatic charge of the toner due to a change of temperature in a developer. SOLUTION: A developing unit 4 is provided with a temperature sensor 5 for detecting the temperature of a developer and a controller 11 performing the control of the toner density calculates the variation in amount of electrostatic charge of the toner from the variation in the temperature of the developer detected by the temperature sensor 5 and controls the toner density by the variation in the amount of electrostatic charge of the toner and the detected value of a magnetic permeability sensor 6.
