The blade wheel excavator has a blade wheel with a row of blades around the circumference of the blade wheel, and outwards orientated chisels (7) for the loosening the material which are fastened on chisel carriers (10,12) consisting of segments (S). The chisels in the radial plan view from the outside on the blade wheel in the cutting direction are arranged on the chisel carriers in a forwards and outwards orientated sequence in relation to one another. An independent claim is included for a method for the breaking up of high strength materials in a continuous excavating by using the proposed blade wheel excavator in which the speed of cut in the circumferential direction of the blade wheel can be set to a value conforming to the circumstances.
