PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for coloring stainless steel where a harmful chromium compound is not used, treatment can be performed by a simple apparatus, unevenness in colors is reduced, and treatment cost is low, and also to provide a coloring treatment liquid for stainless steel. SOLUTION: As a treatment liquid preparation stage, a potassium permanganate aqueous solution, a cobalt nitrate aqueous solution and a potassium nitrate aqueous solution are prepared, and the three kinds of aqueous solutions are mixed by equivalent volume, so as to prepare the coloring treatment liquid for stainless steel. Next, as a coloring stage, an SUS304 sheet is heat-treated at 300°C for 1 hr in an air atmosphere, and is thereafter dipped into the coloring treatment liquid for stainless steel warmed to 50°C.
