<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating a particle filter disposed in an exhaust range in an internal combustion engine, in which the particle accumulation state of the particle filter is determined as correctly as possible, and an operation device for the internal combustion engine implementing the method. <P>SOLUTION: In this method of operating the particle filter 20 disposed in the exhaust range in the internal combustion engine 10, oil consumption of the internal combustion engine 10 is computed by an oil consumption determining means 31 based on an oil signal H sent from an oil sensor 27. Measure for an ash accumulation state mAsche in the particle filter 20 is determined by an ash accumulation quantity determining means 33 based on the oil signal H. The ash accumulation state mAsche can be taken into account for the operation of the particle filter 20, paticularly in establishing a threshold value Lim for the maximum tolerable particle accumulation state mPartikel.
