A retainer is disclosed that retains a release member in an internal combustion engine. The retainer comprises the following components: a cam shaft (428); a cam assembly that includes a cam lobe (422) and a cam driving member (430); and a pin (458) that is substantially transverse and non-intersecting to the cam shaft (428), and that interconnects the release member (414, 418) to the cam assembly, wherein the pin (458) is substantially C-shaped and the pin (458) extends into at least one aperture (470) in the cam driving member (430) that extends in the substantially axial direction of the cam driving member (430).
