Pollen 6 to be cleaned is entrained within an air stream at the nozzle 5 of vacuum machine 1 and sucked tangentially into the cone 16 of electrically insulating material. The dust and microscopic impurity particles are held in the circulating vortex within the cone by the electrostatic field generated on the surface of the cone by friction, whereas the pollen is not so affected by the field and falls through the bottom of the cone to be collected in the vacuum bag 2. When the vacuum is turned off so that the pollen bag may be recovered, the impurity particles settle against the sides of the cone rather than falling into the bag.
